Dear Tehanu,

Seems someone has succeeded in making me look hysterical and
unreasonable on your Website.

OK, we are ANGRY and the fact is that the announcement by the
distributor immediately caused a flood of such angry voices as
'I don't believe this' and 'Shame on you' filling up their BBS
on their official site so that they had to close it down.
Fans are coming again to sign our petition with acceleraion. Letters
have been written and faxed.

It has frightened the distributor and they are now doing their best
to cover it up. I'm not saying they lie: they are not telling you
the whole story. I don't wish to be lengthy but every defence they are
trying to make is and has already been easily disproved.

a)Another translator

Sure, Toda did CREATE such bad subtitles for the trailer in spite of
all the help she is offered. This is the very reason fans are angry at
her. She CUTS AND EDITS, PUTTING QUESTION MARKS where none exists,
no matter what the script or the 'complete translation' really says.

The subtitles on the trailer, which they say had gone through all the
process described in 1) in the notice (announcement), was what aroused
the fans. The great difference between the impressions given by the
dubbed version and the subtitled one was too obvious.
To us it is a proof that even with the help of Tolkien scholars,
Toda will never do a standard job anymore, much less a job to fans
satisfaction.

b)

If they told PJ merely about Akiko Tanaka (she is held high among
the fans) and chose not to mention Toda is given the upper hand,
it would make sense to me.

What Akiko Tanaka was asked to do is what is usually called
'sub-translation', like a graduate student working under his professor.
Some fans believe that the distributor wanted Tanaka's name to soothe
our criticisms.

But it has turned out completely the other way around.


And as for Toda being widely acknowledged as THE best movie translator
in Japan, (we have kept this because we feel sorry for her) well, she
used to be the best years ago. She has her fans, but
that does not excuse her for 'translating' SAURON INTO SOLOMON, does
it? Old Biblical names are known in Japan, too.

I called her shameless and I understand it was unwise. But I do not
mean to take it back. So many have pointed out her mistakes in FotR,
asked her politely to respect the great masterpiece, and the way she
has been rejecting them---I wish you knew---has always added fuel to
the flames.

Whoever sent you the English version of 'the notice', deliberately or not,
chose a wrong way to write this in one line:

It should look as follows:

in Japanese subtitle print, names will appear as
Japanese Subtitles: Natsuko Toda
Subtitle Assistants: Akiko Tanaka, Hyouronsha.


in addition, Tehanu, Luinnenion is clearly not a Japanese. I doubt he/she can read Japanese language sufficiently, because a Japanese would never write the distributors' name

No one above 10 can mistake the second name Shochiku for Matsutake.
This second-grader Kannji mistake surprised me.
