Dear Tehanu,

We read your article titled “Japanese Translations Improving? Now in Greece….” in the news section on 12/28. We would like to point out a number of inaccuracies in the report made by Luinneion. The controversy on the Japanese subtitles has gone on since March 2002, and unfortunately is far from having reached any satisfactory condition. To us, fans of LotR, this continues to be a struggle against the Japanese distributor, and it is therefore important that the facts are presented correctly.

To begin with, there are serious mistakes in the translation that Luinnenion made from the official announcement of Nippon Herald Films Inc. We must assume that Luinnenion’s knowledge of the Japanese language is not advanced enough to understand and evaluate the announcement properly. For instance, he/she translated the name of the Japanese studio co-distributing LotR as “Matsutake Inc.” Actually the Kanji characters of this studio are pronounced as “Shochiku”. This may appear to be only a minor error, but it shows that Luinneion has only a limited knowledge of the Japanese market. after all, Shochiku is one of the largest and most widely known Japanese studios.

Luinneion cited the following passage from the Nippon Herald Announcement: “With regard to who will do the work on the subtitles, we would like to give an abbreviated version of the information announced on the official Lord of the Rings site in September, 2002.”

This passage does not exist in the 12/25 announcement. The original Japanese reads as follows: “Regarding the information as to whom the subtitling would be entrusted and who would be asked to consult on it was already made public in the announcement we made on the (Japanese) official LotR website in September, and therefore we will not repeat it here.” The announcement then went on to explain the process in more detail of how the subtitles would be handled. It is therefore the opposite of an abbreviation, it was actually a detailed follow-up.

In fact, the previous announcement that this is referring to, was not in September but in June 2002. In June 2002, Nippon Herald felt compelled to reply to the fans who protested against the FotR subtitles in numerous petitions and on the Internet. Whether Nippon Herald referred to the wrong date by mistake or intentionally, we do not know. Anyhow, in June Nippon Herald announced their plans for the future subtitle making as follows:

A)　　　　Ms. Natsuko Toda who was responsible for the FotR subtitles would remain as the subtitler for the future installments.
B)　　　　Ms. Akiko Tanaka (highly acknowledged co-translator of the original books) and Hyoronsha (publisher of the books) would be invited to consult on the subtitling process.
C)　　　　No admission of the mistakes committed, no apology; they merely added that the subtitles for FotR video/DVD would be fixed, reasoning the number-of-letters-restriction to be much relaxed in these media in comparison to the theater release. To be fair, the video/DVD subtitles were somewhat improved, still quite a number of serious errors remained.
The 12/25 announcement then explains in detail that the original English script of the TTT international trailer was first handed to Tanaka for the preliminary translation, then passed on to Toda to be refurbished as subtitles, and lastly returned to Tanaka and Hyoronsha for the final check. As for the TTT theatrical release, the division of labour for producing the subtitles is explained as follows: preliminary translation by Hyoronsha; Tanaka to check the preliminary translation; Toda to create the subtitles based on the preliminary translation; Tanaka and Hyoronsha to check the subtitles; Toda, consulting with Tanaka and others, to finalize the subtitle transcript by making necessary adjustments. It furthermore explained that a similar process was adopted for the dubbed version, only there it was Mr. Katsushige Hirata, who would be the main script maker, and who would be consulted by Tanaka and Hyoronsha.
The interesting thing about all this is, that while the dubbed version turns out to be quite excellent, the subtitled version continues to be a problem. Either Tanaka is not much involved in the subtitling process to begin with, or her input is being ignored. We cannot believe that Tanaka, given her intimate knowledge of the books, would consent to such misrepresentations of the story in the subtitled version. Rather, we believe that this entire consultation process is just a big smoke screen, but in substance nothing is changing. It seems, that as long as Toda remains the main subtitler, there is nothing for the Japanese fans to rejoice about.

Just two of the many examples of the damage Toda continues to do to the film, even involving this supposedly great consultation process, can be studied in the TTT trailer:

* Sam’s original line: “It's the ring. It has taken hold of him,” took on a new twist and became: “Wonder if it’s the ring?”
* Sam and Frodo’s dialogue: “We’re lost. I don’t think Gandalf meant for us to come this way.” “ He didn’t mean for a lot of things to happen Sam”, lost its gravity and was toned down to: “Wonder if this is the way Gandalf meant?” (Note that "We're lost" is eliminated) “One unexpected thing after the other.”

We are not alone in being quite alarmed about this state of affairs. What the 12/25 announcement really meant to the LotR fans was, that substantial improvement could not be expected. The Japanese fans reacted at once, and a flood of protests was deluged on the BBS of the official Japanese LotR website. So what happened after that protest? Nippon Herald shut the BBS down! They attribute this decision to a system failure, yet we do not believe this to be the complete story. Currently, it is not possible to post new messages on the BBS though the past messages can be viewed.

We intend to inform PJ as soon as possible that the situation on the Japanese subtitles has not substantially improved. PJ’s comments: “We've got someone else to do the Japanese translations this time around.” (TVNZ interview at TTT Paris Premier) seems to suggest that “changing of the translator” isn’t merely PJ’s private intention but a joint intention of the team who has endeavored with him to bring the film trilogy about.

At this moment we have no way of knowing how the issue of Japanese LotR subtitles have been communicated between PJ and all the parties involved. But if PJ is still of the understanding that the matter is resolved, he will surely be disappointed. In the 12/25 announcement, Nippon Herald flatly states that PJ’s above comments were to them a total surprise, and declares that the credits for the TTT subtitles as a part of the "Staff & Cast" credits will be as follows: “Subtitles by Natsuko Toda, in collaboration with Akiko Tanaka and Hyoronsha.” If we are to take this seriously, Toda is still to remain in the same position as the subtitler for TTT, which is in straight contradiction of PJ’s statement.

It is therefore important to us Japanese fans, that the whole issue is not presented on the Internet as “resolved”. The contrary is true, and we need to continue to keep up the pressure.

By the way, Toda has already been quite a controversial subtitler in Japan, even before the current protests over LotR subtitles. Just because she is probably the best known subtitler, does not mean that she is also “THE best movie translator in Japan” (quoted from Shiots). In Japan, quite frequently, the “old-habits-die-hard” of the Japanese business practice does not allow younger and more competent translators who would actually be entitled to be “in the same league with her” to compete freely, because this would endanger the oligopoly of the subtitling market by a small cluster of older and supposedly more experienced translators. For the record, let me here pick up some of Toda’s past classic misdeeds:
--- in "AMADEUS"
[English] death mass (First I must get the death mass, and then I ... I must achieve his death.)
[Subtitle] death mask (First I must get the death mask, and then I ... I must achieve his death.)
[Comment] How is it possible to get a DEATH MASK before someone's dead?

--- in "APOCALYPSE NOW"

[Comment] "Fifty-caliber" is actually about 12.7mm. Imagine a gun with a diameter of 50mm!

--- in "Gladiator"

えっと、最初にいきなり言い訳ですが(^^;
【暫定案】の時に独断でアップしたものは、一重に、メール発送前の、それもなるべく早い内に、内容の大意だけでも、和訳を必要とされる方に提示したいとの思いからだったもので、英語の解釈が甘いところがあるという自覚と、それとは別に日本語として妙なところが残っているはずという自覚とが、両方あるという段階で見切ってしまったものでした。深夜にアップして、寝て起きて読み直しただけでも、大汗かきました(^^;

それでも、恥はかくつもりでいたことなので、特に荒立てることもないだろうと思ってもいたのですが。今回、最終稿のご呈示と共に、Evenstarさんが寛大なお言葉（それにしても過分であります^^;　が、ありがとうございます〜T T）を下さったので、自己リベンジする勇気も湧きました（笑）。それでも、曖昧な部分がまだ少々残っているのですが、それは、今時点での自分の英語力の限界だということが分かってるので、致し方ありません(^^;

ま、そんなわけで、まあ先日のよりはちょっとはまし程度ではありますが、Evenstarさんが代表してくださったメールの最終形を、今度はPSの部分もちゃんと含めて（笑）、もう一度、アップいたします。

12/28付けでニュース欄に掲載された貴方の記事「Japanese Translations Improving? Now in Greece….」を読みました。Luinneion氏の報告には多数の誤りが含まれていることを指摘したく思います。日本語字幕についての論争は2002年3月から続いており、遺憾ながら、未だにとうてい満足できる状況には至っていません。私達、LotRのファンにとって、この日本の配給会社との苦闘は続いており、そのため、事実を正確に提示することが重要なのです。

まずは、Luinnenion氏による日本ヘラルドの公式告知の翻訳の中にある、幾つかのゆゆしい誤りのことから始めます。私達は、Luinnenion氏が、かの告知内容を正確に理解し吟味することができるほどには、日本語に通じていないものと思わざるを得ません。例えば、彼（あるいは彼女）は、LotRの共同出資者の名前を「まつたけ社」としていますが、この会社名の漢字の正しい読み方は「しょうちく」です。小さな間違いのようですが、このことだけでもLuinneion氏が日本事情について疎いということが分かります。なにしろ、松竹は、日本では最も大きくよく知られた映画会社の一つですから。

Luinneion氏は、ヘラルドの告知文から、次のような一節を引用していますが：　「誰が字幕製作をするかについては、公式LotRサイトで2002年9月に告知したものの省略版で示したいと思います」

そのような文章は、12/25付け告知には存在しません。本来の日本語の意味するところはこうです：　「字幕作成を誰に委託するかについてと、誰に助力を請うかについては、既に９月に日本版LotR公式サイトで告知済みなので、繰り返しません」　さらに、どのような手順で字幕が作られるか、より詳しい説明が続きます。つまりそれは省略と言うよりは、むしろ、詳細の後追いなのです。

ここで言われている前回の告知とは、実際には９月ではなく、2002年６月に出されたものでした。2002年６月、日本ヘラルドは、多数が参加したの署名の形であるいはインターネット上で、FotRの字幕に対して抗議したファン達へ、回答することを強いられたのです。日本ヘラルドが、事実と違う日付を引いているのが過失によるのか故意なのか、私達には分かりませんが。ともあれ、６月に、日本ヘラルドは、字幕作成における以後の方針について、以下のように述べています。

A)
FotRの字幕の責任者である戸田奈津子氏が、後年公開分についても字幕製作者で在り続ける。
B)
字幕製作の過程において、田中明子氏（原作の共訳者として高名）と評論社（原作の出版社）が、協力者として招聘される。
C)
間違いを犯したことも認めず、謝罪もなく；　彼らはただ、FotRのビデオやDVDという媒体では、劇場版に比べて字数制限が緩やかなので、字幕が修正されるだろうとだけ、付け足しました。確かに、ビデオとDVDでの字幕は、ある程度良くなっていましたが、幾つもの深刻な間違いも残ったままです。

12/25付けの告知はまた、TTTのインターナショナル版予告編についての詳細として、オリジナルの英語スクリプトが最初は予備訳のために田中氏に渡され、それから字幕に直すために戸田氏に回され、最後に、最終チェックのために田中氏および評論社に戻されたと説明しています。TTTの劇場公開について言えば、字幕作成作業については次のように説明されています。評論社による予備訳；　予備訳を田中氏がチェック；　戸田氏が予備訳を元に字幕を作成；　田中氏と評論社が字幕をチェック；　田中氏その他からの助力を受けながら、戸田氏が必要な調整を行い字幕原稿を完成。さらに、同様のプロセスは吹き替え版でも採られたと、主たる台本製作者が平田勝茂氏であり、田中氏と評論社の助力を受けたということだけで説明されています。

以上において興味深いことは、吹き替え版がかなり上質に仕上がる一方で、字幕版では問題が続いているということです。田中氏が字幕作成過程に充分に関わっていないのか、あるいは、田中氏の仕事が無視されているのか。原作についての詳細な知識を持つ田中氏が、字幕版の内容にあのような誤った表現を承諾するとは、私達には信じられないことです。それどころか、この完璧な監査プロセスとは単なる大きな煙幕に過ぎず、実質的な変更はないのではないかと本気で疑っています。戸田氏が主要な字幕製作者としてある限り、日本のファン達にとっての朗報はあり得ないように思われます。

戸田氏が映画を損ない続けているたくさんの実例の内から、この厳重だそうなチェック体制にかかってさえTTT予告編の中に存在する、検証に値するものを二つだけ：

サムの台詞「It's the ring. It has taken hold of him, 」は、新規の歪められ台詞として、こう変わりました「指輪なのかな？」
サムとフロドの会話「"We’re lost. I don’t think Gandalf meant for us to come this way.” “ He didn’t mean for a lot of things to happen Sam"」からは、その重さは失われ「これはガンダルフの意図していた道なのかな？」（注：We’re lost　の欠落）「予期しないことが続く」と、印象が弱まります。

事態の現況に強い警戒感を抱いているのは、私達だけではありません。LotRのファン達にとって、12/25の告知が真実意味するところは、本当の意味での改善は期待できないということだったのです。日本のファン達はすぐに反応し、LotR日本版公式サイトのBBSには抗議が殺到しました。その異議申し立てに対して何が起きたでしょう？　日本ヘラルドはBBSを閉鎖したのです！　彼らはそれをシステム障害のためとしていますが、私達は信じておらず、全くの言い逃れであろうと思っています。現在、そのBBSは、過去の書き込みが読めるだけで、新たに投稿する事は出来ません。

私達は、日本語字幕における状況が実質的に改善していないということを、できるだけ早くPJにも知らせるつもりです。PJのコメント「We've got someone else to do the Japanese translations this time around. (TVNZ interview at TTT Paris Premier) 」は、「翻訳者の交替」が、PJの単なる個人的な意向なのではなくて、彼と共にこの三部作映画の実現に尽力してきた人々との共有のものであると、示唆しているように思えます。

今この時、私達には、LotRの日本語字幕の問題が、PJと全ての関係者の間でどのように話し合われたのか、知る術はありません。けれど、もしPJが、今でも、この問題は解決されたものとの認識であるとしたら、彼はきっと失望することになるでしょう。12/25の告知では、日本ヘラルドは、上記のPJコメントは全くの驚きであったと、にべもなく明言しており、また、TTTの字幕関連のクレジットは、「スタッフ・キャスト」の一部として以下のようになると公言しています。「日本語字幕：戸田奈津子、字幕協力：田中明子　評論社」　この、戸田氏がTTTの字幕製作者として同じポジションに居続けるということを、重く取れば、それはPJの声明と真っ向から相反するということです。

ですから、私達日本のファン達にとっては、この問題全体が「解決された」ものとして、インターネット上に取り上げられなくなるということは、一大事なのです。真実は逆であり、私達は、働きかけを続ける必要があるのです。

ところで、日本では、現在のLotRでの抗議活動以前でさえ、戸田氏は、字幕製作者として既に大変な論争の的だったのです。彼女は日本では最も名前を知られた字幕製作者であるでしょうが、だからといって、「日本で最高の字幕製作者（Shiots氏によるところの）」でもあるということにはなりません。日本では、こうしたことは全く珍しくないのですが、なかなか改まらない業界慣習のため、より若くやる気のある翻訳者達が、実際に彼女と比べて遜色のない実力があったとしても、自由に競合することが許されていないのです。先達の、より経験豊かとされている一握りの翻訳者達の寡占状態が危うくなるからでしょう。　裏付けのために、戸田氏の、伝説的に有名な過去の罪について、幾つか取り上げさせてください。

「アマデウス」では
