タイトルはちょっと凝って"Frodo is such an apologist..."　です（apologistというのはJosh様の創作語だそうですから、辞書を引いて悩まないように＞皆様）

私の不調でスタートが少し遅くなりましたが、順次ご紹介していきます。
最初に、Josh様＝Luinnenion 氏の、「最近見るようになった日本の指輪サイト (うちのことです　^^;) でみつけた面白い質問」のご紹介があります。それに続くレスは、私にはよくわからないものもありますし、ひやかしかな？という１行レスもあるんですけど、とばさずに全レス載せてみます。今回は最初の５個くらいです。

ハーブの和訳は、比較的まともな全文訳もあり、ちょっとあやしい抄訳になっているところもあります。拙速・大意訳です。自分の訳に疑問がある所は、和文中にもとの英単語をあえて出しましたので、読む方が考えてください (^^;)

This question came up on a Japanese LOTR BBS I've recently started following, and I thought it was a fascinating question I don't think we've really addressed (much less beat to death) yet.
最近見るようになった日本のサイト掲示板で、面白い質問がありました。今までこの場で討議しつくされた中にはなかったと思うので、紹介します。

In the scene in Henneth Annun, Sam encourages Frodo to put on the Ring and escape. Frodo replies (paraphrasing), "I can't. You were right, Sam. You tried to tell me. I'm sorry."
ヘネス・アンヌーンの場面で、サムがフロドに指輪をはめて脱出するようにすすめ、フロドが答えるところ（原文通りではないですが）「それはできない。サム、お前が言った通りなんだ。僕に教えようとしてくれたのに。ごめんよ」

Now, what exactly is Frodo apologizing for? Is it for how he reacted to Sam when Sam suggested the Ring was taking hold of him? Is it for not being able to escape? Is it for being weak? For leading Sam into this rather tight spot?
さてここでフロドは厳密には何について謝罪しているのだろうか？サムに「指輪にとらわれているんです」と言われた時の自分の応答か、逃げることができないからか、自分の弱さについてか、こんな苦しい状況にサムを巻き込んだことか？

My own opinion that I expressed on the Japanese BBS was that it was for all of this. That Frodo was basically feeling despair at the hopelessness of the situation, and "I'm sorry" was the only way he could express his regret and shame to Sam. He wasn't apologizing for one particular thing, rather he was apologizing for everything.
その日本のサイトに書き込んだ私自身の意見は、「これら全部がこめられている」でした。フロドの気持ちの根底にあるのは、おかれた状況への絶望と無力感であり、 "I'm sorry" と言うことでしか自分の後悔 regret と恥 shame を伝えられなかったのでしょう。特定のひとつのことを謝罪しているのではなく、「何もかも」ごめん、なのだと思います。

What exactally do you mean by 'everything'? There are some parts of that trip which Sam might have enjoyed...

I hadn't thought about it before, but now I do - it seems to me more an apology for reacting so badly to Sam's attempt to make him wake up to what was happening to him. I think there was also a bit of "I'm sorry I can't do what needs to be done to save the mission, because I haven't been able to hold out against the ring for long enough", too.
今まで考えたことなかったけど、面白いですね。サムがフロドの目を覚まさせようとしたのに、それを拒絶したことを謝っているというのは大きいように思えるけど、「指輪の力にもう抵抗しきれない、使命のため必要なことでも出来なくなっている、すまない」というのもいくらか入っていると私は思います。
These are the two major things I think he was apologising for, but there were probably all the other things you mention underneath, that he felt badly about, too. Is that what you mean by "everything"?
主なものはその二つだとして、たぶんそれ以外にもあなた（Luinnenion 氏）があげたようなこと全部が下敷きになっている、いろいろサムに悪いと思っている。それを指して「何もかも」と言ったのではないですか？

I think he was apologizing specifically for the incident when Sam urged him to fight the influence of the Ring and Frodo snapped at him: "You tried to tell me" makes sense in that context.
私は、出来事としてはサムが「指輪の影響と戦わなくては」と言い、それにきつい言い返し方をしたことへの謝罪だと思います。"You tried to tell me"があるのですから、そう考えるのが筋が通ります。
On a deeper level it may represent Frodo's acknowledgement that he just isn't up to the job: "I can't" might foreshadow events to come, while Sam's "You can do it" highlights his role in supporting Frodo and urging him on in Mordor.
でもより深いレベルでは、フロド自身の、「僕にはこの使命を果たすだけの力量がない」という認識を表しているかもしれません。"I can't" はこれから起ころうとしている事件の投影であり、サムの　"You can do it" という言葉は、これからモルドールへの旅でフロドを支え、励ましていくサムの役割を際立たせているのかも。

Or am I reading too much into it?
これでは深読みし過ぎでしょうか？

もしかしたら「ごめんよサム、こんなこと何一つ起きなければよかったのに。お前を引きずり込むべきじゃなかった」とか？

（ハーブ注：I wish none of it had happened, はモリアでガンダルフとの対話でフロドが言った台詞から、と思われる）
