解釈が疑問な点、批判など、遠慮なくお寄せください。 なお、誰にもわかるような易しい部分は手抜きもあります（冒頭の I feel it の繰り返しとか）。また、どうしても自分が不満な個所のみ、〔意訳〕と断って、翻訳なら普通これくらいは手を加えても許されるだろう、という例を示しました。

It began with the forging of the Great Rings. 始まりは、力ある指輪が造られたこと。
Three were given to the Elves: immortal, wisest and fairest of all beings. 三つの指輪がエルフ族に与えられた。不死にして、もっとも賢く美しい種族。
Seven to the Dwarf-lords: great miners and craftsmen of the mountain halls. 七つの指輪はドワーフの王たちに。山の館に住み、金属の採掘と細工の技にすぐれた種族。
And nine. Nine rings were gifted to the race of men, who above all else desire power. そして九つの指輪が、人間族に贈られた。何にもまして力を欲する種族。
For within these rings was bound the strength and will to govern each race. 自種族を統治する意志と威力が、その指輪のなかに込められていた。
But they were all of them deceived. For another ring was made. しかし彼らはみな、欺かれたのだった。というのは、さらに別の、一つの指輪が造られたからである。
In the land of Mordor, in the fires of Mount Doom, the Dark Lord Sauron forged in secret a Master Ring to control all others. モルドールの地、“滅びの山”の火の中で、冥王サウロンはひそかに造り出した。他のすべての指輪を支配する、主（あるじ）たる指輪を。
And into this Ring he poured his cruelty, his malice, and his will to dominate all life. そしてこの指輪に、サウロンは注ぎ込んだ。自分の残忍さを、悪意を、生きとし生けるものすべてに君臨する意志を。
One Ring to rule them all. すべてを統べる、一つの指輪である。

One by one, free lands of Middle-earth fell to the power of the Ring. ミドルアースの自由諸国は、次々と、かの指輪の力の前に屈服していった。
But there were some who resisted. しかし抗った者たちもあった。
A last alliance of Men and Elves marched against the armies of Mordor. And on the slopes of Mount Doom, they fought for the freedom of Middle-earth. 人間とエルフは最後の同盟を結び、モルドール軍に立ち向かうべく進軍した。そして“滅びの山”の斜面において、ミドルアースの自由のために戦った。
Elrond: Tangado haid! Leithio i philinn! [Translation: "Hold [your] positions! Fire the arrows!"] 持ち場を守れ！ 弓、射て！
Narrator (V.O.) Victory was near. But the power of the Ring could not be undone. 勝利は目の前だった。だが、かの指輪の力を消すことはできなかった。

It was in this moment, when all hope had faded, that Isildur, son of the king, took up his father's sword. 一切の望みが消えたまさにその時、王の息子イシルドゥアは父の剣を拾い上げた。
Sauron, the enemy of the Free peoples of Middle-earth, was defeated. ミドルアースの自由の民の敵、サウロンは、ここに敗北した。
The Ring passed to Isildur, who had this one chance to destroy evil forever. かの指輪はイシルドゥアの手に渡った。これこそが、悪を根絶やしにする唯一の機会であった。
But the hearts of men are easily corrupted. And the Ring of power has a will of its own. だが人間の心は容易に堕落する。しかも、かの指輪は自分の意志を持っていた。
Narrator (V.O.) It betrayed Isildur... to his death. 指輪はイシルドゥアを裏切り、死に至らしめた。
And some things that should not have been forgotten were lost. History became legend; legend became myth. そうして、忘れてはならぬことが忘れ去られた。歴史は伝説となり、伝説は神話となった。
And for two and a half thousand years the Ring passed out of all knowledge. 二千五百年の間、指輪のことは誰にも知られぬまま過ぎた。
Until, when chance came, it ensnared a new bearer. そこへ、好機が訪れ、指輪は新たな持ち主をとりこにした。 〔注：chanceは「偶然」にするか迷ったのですが、指輪は待ち構えていたのだから、ということで「機会」のほうを採りました。〕
Gollum: My preciousss. わしの･･･いとしい大切なもの･･･
Narrator (V.O.) The Ring came to the creature Gollum who took it deep into the tunnels of the Misty Mountains. And there it consumed him. 指輪はゴラムという生き物の手に渡った。ゴラムは霧ふり山脈の洞窟の奥深くへそれを持って行った。そして、そこで指輪はゴラムの魂を喰らい尽くした。
〔it consumed himは直訳のしようがなくて、どうしても意訳にしかできませんでした〕
Gollum: It came to me. My own. My love. My own. My Preciousss... Gollum... わしのところに来てくれたんだ。わしのものだ。いとしい大切な、わしのものだ。いとしいものよ･･･ゴホッ･･･
Narrator (V.O.) The Ring brought to Gollum unnatural long life. For 500 years it poisoned his mind. And in the gloom of Gollum's cave it waited. 指輪はゴラムに不自然な長命をもたらした。五百年にわたり、指輪は彼の心を毒し続けた。陰鬱な洞窟の中で、指輪は待った。
Darkness crept back in the forest of the world. Rumour grew of a shadow in the East, whispers of a nameless fear. 外界の森に、闇がひそかに戻ってきた。“東の影”、名づけられぬ恐怖の噂がささやかれるようになった。
And the Ring of Power perceived its time had now come. 指輪は、時が来たことを感じ取った。
It abandoned Gollum. But something happened then, the Ring did not intend. It was picked up by the most unlikely creature imaginable. 指輪はゴラムを見捨てた。しかしその時、指輪が意図しなかったことが起きた。拾い上げたのは、考え得るかぎり最もありそうにない種族だったのだ。
Bilbo: What's this? 何だこれは？
Narrator (V.O.) A Hobbit. Bilbo Baggins of the Shire. シャイアに住むホビット族の、ビルボ・バギンズであった。
Bilbo: A ring. 指輪だ。
Gollum: Lost! My Precious is lost!!! 失くなった！ 大切な、いとしいものが失くなった！
Narrator (V.O.) For the time would soon come when Hobbits would shape the fortunes of all. ホビットたちが、万人の運命を左右する時が、まもなく来ようとしていた。
