    ----------
It is fallen to us to defend Jerusalem.
And we have made our preparations as well as they can be made.
None of us took this city from Muslims.
No Muslim, of the great army now coming against us, was born when this city was lost.
We fight over the offense we did not give
against those who were not alive to be offended.

    What is Jerusalem?
Your holy places lie over the Jewish temple that the Romans pulled down.
The Muslim places of worship lie over yours.

    Which is more holy?
The Wall? The Mosque? The Sepulcher?
    Who has claim?
No one has claim. All have claim.

    - That is blasphemy!
    - Be quiet.

We defend this city, not to protect these stones,
but the people living within these walls.

    -----------
The Hostpitaler:You know this place, my lord?
Godfrey:(???) I know all of it.

The Hospitaler :The blacksmith is the man you seek. His name is Balian.
But now he mourns. The burial we passed at the crossroad was for his wife.
Her child died. She was overcome with grief and killed herself.

Godfrey:You still advise what you advised upon the road?
The Hospitaler :I do, My lord.

the German:〔鍛冶場の梁を指して〕 What does that say?
Balian : "What man is a man who does not make the world better?"

    Godfrey:Leave me with this man.
(To Balian) I am sorry that you lost your wife and child.
        I ... also have lost.
Some say Jerusalem is the very center of the world for asking forgiveness.
For myself, I call it here, now.

        I knew your mother.
To be courteous, I should say that it was against her objections.
But I did not force her. I loved her in my fashion.
Balian, I'm your father. I have forgiveness to ask of you.

I am Godfrey, the Baron of Ibelin. I have one hundred men at arms in Jerusalem.
If you come with me, you will have a living and ... will have my thanks, there it is.

Balian : Whoever you are, my lord, my place is here.
Godfrey:What made it your place is now dead.
You will never see me again. If you want anything of me, take it now.
    Balian :I want nothing.

Godfrey:I am sorry for your trouble. God protect you.
Jerusalem is easy to find. Come to where the men speak Italian,
and continue, till they speak something else.
We go by Messina. Good bye.
    ------

    Godfrey:(to his men) Wait here.
(to Balian) You've come to kill me?
Even these days, it is not easy. Well ?

    Balian : I have done ... murder.
    Godfrey:Haven't we all ?
Balian : Is it true, that in Jerusalem I can erase my sins?
And those of my wife? Is it true?
Godfrey:We can find out together. Show me your hand.
    -----
    Godfrey:〔剣をバリアンに与えて〕Take it up.
Let's see what you're made of.
The Hospitaler : His hand is hurt, My lord.
Godfrey:I once fought two days with an arrow through my testicle.
Never use a low guard. You fight well, let's work on your skills.
Take a high guard, like this.
Italians call it "la posto de falcone(?)", the guard of a hawk.
Strike from high, like this. Do it. Sword straighter.
Step back(?). Bend your knees. Sword straighter.
        Defend yourself. 〔
Blade isn't the only part of the sword.
        Attack !

the German:I have your leave?
(to Ballian) Pay attention. Ein! Zwei! Drei! ...

    Godfrey:What's this?
Captain?:You have with you the man, Balian, who killed a priest.
I am charged by the Lord bishop to bring him back.

Balian : What he says is true. They have the right to take me.
the German:I say he did nothing of the charge. If you say he's guilty,
we fight. God will decide the truth of it.
Hospitaler :Our German friend is a close student of the law.

Captain?:Just give him to me. I'll fight for something else. He is a murderer.
Godfrey:So am I. Whoever dies here today, you will certainly be among them.
Captain?:You are a lord. I must give you the road.

Godfrey:Thank the bishop for his love !!〔
The Hospitaler : So you broke the arrow.
If the ribs are broken, marrow may enter the blood,
in which case you take a fever and die.
Or a cyst will form, you will live. You are in the hands of God.

    Godfrey:I can miss more wine.
(To Balian) It was not that they had no right to take you.
It was the way they asked.
Balian :They had the right to take me.
    Godfrey:So do I.
    ---------
    Guy : Who is this?
    Godfrey: My son.
Guy : Would I had fought you when you were still capable of making bastards.
Godfrey: I knew your mother when she was making hers,
but fortunately you're too old to be one of mine.
Guy : All will be said.
    ---------
Godfrey: Do you know what lies in the Holy Land ? A new world.
A man who in France had not a house is, in Holy Land,
the master of the city. He who was the master of the city,
begs in the gutter. There, at the end of the world,
you are not what you were born, but what you have it in yourself to be.

Balian : I have to find forgiveness. That's all I know.

Godfrey:Whatever your position, you are of my house.
That means, you will serve the king of Jerusalem.

Balian : What could a king ask of a man like me?

Godfrey:A better world than has ever been seen.
A kingdom of conscience. A kingdom of heaven.
There is peace between Christians and Muslims.
We can live together. Or, between Saladin and the king, we try.
Did you think that lay at the end of the crusade? It does.
My son, you are all that survives me. Do not disappoint me.
    ---------
The Hospitaler:Get down on your knees.

    Godfrey:
Be without fear in the face of your enemies.
Be brave and upright that God may love thee.
Speak the truth, always, even if it leads to your death.
Safeguard the helpless and do no wrong.

       That is your oath. 〔
It hurts, so you'll remember it.

The Hospitaler:Rise a knight, Baron of Ibelin.

Godfrey:Defend the king. If the king is no more, protect the people.

The Hospitaler:This time you confess to holy God, not your son.
Are you sorry for all your sins?

    Godfrey:For all ... but one.

■3355 / inTopicNo.4) 変更解説:Would I had fought you

Would I have fought you ⇒ Would I had fought you

    すなわち、最初は“I would have fought”の倒置形?」
    would that(=I wish)のthatが省略された形+仮定法過去完了

    http://david-thewlis.com/kohquotes.php
     Would I had

    1.格言
What man is a man who does not make the world better.
    従って、全体の構造は「what manとは、does not make the world betterという人である」、つまりwhat man=世界をより良くしない人 。

Man is a man who makes the world better.

To be courteous I should say that it was against her objections.

Let's see what you're made of.

    "la posto de falcone(?)"

Our German friend is a close student of the law.

    a student of the lawは、法学部の学生

If the ribs are broken, marrow may enter the blood,
in which case you take a fever and die.
Or a cyst will form, you will live.

you are not what you are born, but what you have it in yourself to be.

    not A, but Bの構文です。
前半、聴き取りはwhat you are bornですが、you were ということはないですか?

what you have it in yourself to be

My son, you are all that survives me.

    1)
    >Godfrey:We can find out together.

    2)
    >We can live together. Or, between Saladin and the king, we try.

    1.格言
    > What man is a man who does not make the world better.
What color do you like?

(The letter made me sad.

To be courteous I should say that it was against her objections.

What are little girls made of?
Sugar and spice, all things nice,
that's what little girls are made of.

Let's see what you're made of.

Our German friend is a close student of the law.

He is a good swimmer. My mother is a good cook.

He was one of my greatest teachers.

    7.は
    >聴き取りはwhat you are bornですが、you were ということはないですか?
you were bornに直しておきます。

    >what you have it in yourself to be

He is not what he was.「彼は昔の彼ではない」

    ---------
    なお
you are not what you were born, but what you have it in yourself to be.

    1.格言
    > What man is a man who does not make the world better.

いや小説でも、 "what in the world," he muttered. とか "Who knows..."

(This is your prize of a/the? battle. I am your prisoner,
    your slave, should you wish.)
I have been a slave, or very near to one. I will never (以下不明)
(The man you killed was a great cavalier among Muslims. )
    I will pray for him.

(Sibylla : Where is your master?)
    I have none.
(Sibylla : Give me some water. Thank you for the drink .
If you happen to see Balian, the son of Godfrey,
    tell him that Sibylla called.)

(To Sibylla) This morning I spoke without knowing who you are.
(Sibylla : I knew who you are. It's unmistakable.
I loved your father, and (shall/sure?) love you. Do you fear being with
    me?)
    No. And yes.
Tiberias thinks me unpredictable. I am. Unpredictable.
    No. There.

(Sibylla : I'm on my way to Kana, where Jesus changed water to wine.
(?) What a better trick (would be ?) to change you to a noble
    man?)
That should be easy. In France, a few yards of silk can make a noble man.
(Sibylla : I expect your hospitality.)
    It is given.

    (Sibylla : What?)
It seems years (since?) I haven't seen a woman eat.
(Sibylla : Truly? I was watching you today. If you given a touch of dirt,
it seems, you will build a new Jerusalem here.)
Here(?) is my place. (???) if I didn't try to make it better?

(Sibylla : They try to be one. One heart, one morality.
Their prophet says "Submit", Jesus says "Decide".)
    Did you decide on Guy?
(Sibylla : Guy was chosen by my mother. I was fifteen at the time.)

(Sibylla : Why do you think I'm here?)
I know (???) not on (your?) way to Kana.
(Sibylla : What else do you know, my lord?)
I know that you are a princess, and I am no lord.
    (Sibylla : A knight.)
    Neither earned, nor proved.
(Sibylla : I'm not here with you because I'm bored or wicked. I'm here
because...because in the East, between one person and another, there is
    only light.)

(Sibylla : What becomes of us?)
The world will decide. The world will always decide.

(Almaric : My lord, the king is marching on/for? Kerak.)

(Almaric: These people are not safe outside the walls.
Saladin will certainly come behind them.)
(To Sibylla) Go into the fortress now.

My lord, my lord.
My lord Reynald prays(?) you bring your horse to Kerak.
Thank you, but no. If we do, these people will die.
We hold the Saracen (???) till the king arrives.
    (So be it.)

(Almaric : We cannot attack that. (???)
(To Almaric) Are you with me?

You were not the man's servant.
    (No. He was MY servant.)
    What becomes of us?
(As you desire. "You reap what you sow". You have heard of this, no?
Get up. You may go into Kerak, but you will die there. My master is here.
Tell my lord Salahadin. (The?)Jerusalem is come.)

    Sibylla!
(Sibylla : (?) you refused the king? I am what I am.
I offer you that. And the world... You say no.)
Do you think I'm like Guy? That I would sell my soul?
(Sibylla : There will be a day, when you wish(ed) you have done a little
evil to do a greater good.)

Is it why you came to the Holy Land? Come on !

(Guy : We march at once. What say this council?)
No. If you must have war, this army cannot move away from water.
You have a chance to hold the city. But if you move out against Saladin,
this army will be destroyed and the city left defenseless.
(Guy : When I wish a blacksmith to advise me on war, I will tell him.)
Saladin wants you to come out. He is waiting for you to make that mistake.
    He knows this(?) man.

(Sibylla : When Saladin comes, we are not defensible.
Save the people from what I have done.)
    I will.

    (We must leave the city.)
    How exactly, my lord bishop?
(The fastest horse from the lesser(?) gate.)
    And the people?
( It(?) is unfortunate about the people, but it is God's will.)

(My lord, my lord. My lord, how will you defend Jerusalem without
    knights? We have no knights!)
    Truly?
    What is your condition?
    (I'm a servant to the patria(--rch.) )
(This is one of my servants.)
Is he? You are/were? born a servant? Kneel.
Every man at arms, or capable of bearing them! Kneel!
    On your knees!
Be without fear in the face of your enemies.
Be brave and upright that God may love thee.
Speak the truth, even if it leads to your death.
Safegurad the helpless. That is your oath. And that is so you remember it.
Rise a knight! Rise a knight!!
(Who do you think you are? You alter the world?
Does making a man a knight make him a better fighter?)
    Yes.

    (My lord?)
    No.
(Almaric : When will it begin?)
    Soon.

(To Almaric) That was only the/a? first day. There may be (a) hundred more.
(Almaric : Saladin will show no mercy.)
We must hold out (and) force him to offer terms.
    (Almaric : What terms?)
We fight for the people, their safety and freedom.

(If the body is burned, it cannot be resurrected
    until the Judgement day/time.)
If we do not burn these bodies, we'll all be dead of disease in three
    days.
God will understand, my lord. If he does not understand, then he is not
    God.
    And we need not worry.

This is where we all make a stand. We must prepare.

When this wall comes down, there will be no quarter.
If you draw down your arms, your families will die.
We can break this army here. So, why (???) let them come?
    Let them come! Come on!

I have surrendered Jerusalem. All will be safely escorted to the sea.
If this is the "Kingdom of Heaven", let God do it as he wills.

Your brother's kingdom was here, and here.
That kingdom can never be surrendered.
(Sibylla : What should I do? I'm stiil the queen of Akko,Ascalon, and
    Tripoli.)
Decide not to be a queen. And I will come to you.

A queen never walks. And yet you are walking.

(We crusade to recover the kingdom of Jerusalem.)
You go to where the man speak Italian, and continue till they speak
    something else.
(We've come by this road to find Balian, who was a defender of Jerusalem.)
    I am a blacksmith.
(And I am the King of England.)
    I am a blacksmith.

    イタリア語の文法は学んだことが無いので、完璧な解説は出来ないですが、手持ちのイタリア語の辞書では

    falcone=鷹狩りの鷹 (falcoなら鷹)
    posto=位置・地位など (英語のpositionとほぼ同義だと思う)

(When the king is dead, Jerusalem will be no place for friends of Muslims,
or traitors to Christendom like your father.
I am Guy de Lusignan. Remember that name, and me. Keep it.)
My lord! How will you ride if you have no stick to beat the horse?
(He will be king in/of? Jerusalem one day.)

"I can go no further."
