（subtitle）What are these shorties here for?
comment：The subtitle makes Barliman too rude a landlord to offer any greetings to his guests, who looks down on Hobbits.

＞The Council of Elrond
Boromir:
（script）Long has my father, the Steward of Gondor kept the forces of Mordor at bay. By the blood of our people are your lands kept safe.
（subtitle）My father who was the Steward of Gondor beat off the army of Mordor. By the blood of our people, he kept your lands safe.
comment：According to the subtitle, Boromir's father is already dead. Some of the audience who have also read the original think the story was changed by the director.

＞The Bridge of Khazad-dum
Gandalf：
（script）I am a servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the flame of Anor!
（subtitle）I am a servant of the Secret(Anor) Fire, the Creator of life!
comment：It is unbelievable. "Wielder of the flame" is eliminated, Anor is identified with Secret, "the Creator of life" is made up by the translator.

＞Lothlorien 1
Boromir:
（script）And the tower guard shall take up the call "The Lords of Gondor have returned."
（subtitle）And the tower guard will cry "The King of Gondor has returned."
comment：Boromir calls Aragorn his king only at his death. But the subtitle completely ignores this and spoils the climax of the film.

＞Lothlorien 2
Galadriel:
（script）I give you the light of Earendil, our most beloved star.
（subtitle）I give you the light of Elendil.
comment：All the Tolkien readers among the audience are puzzled to find "Earendil" is changed to "Elendil", leaping over three thousand years.

＞Amon Hen 1
Frodo:
（script）You are not yourself.
（subtitle）You are a liar!
comment：Frodo knows Boromir is now under the dominion of the ring, but the subtitle describes Frodo as despising Boromir utterly. It settles the impression of Boromir for the audience as an ill-willed, dishonest man.

＞Amon Hen 2
Frodo:
（script）Can you protect me from yourself? Would you destroy it?
（subtitle）Don't you need this? Can you destroy it?
comment：It looks as if Frodo were the tempter, not the ring.

＞Parth Galen 1
Aragorn:
（script）I let Frodo go.
（subtitle）He has left.
Boromir:
（script）Then you did what I could not.
（subtitle）I am ashamed.
comment：With these subtitles the audience cannot see that Boromir recognizes Aragorn as his superior, nor that Aragorn resisted the ring's temptation to which Boromir had succumbed.

＞Parth Galen 2
Aragorn:
（script）I do not know what strength is in my blood. But I swear to you, I will not let the White City fall. Nor our people fail.
（subtitle）By the strength in my blood, I will protect our city, and save men from ruin.
comment：It is too bold of the translator to assume that Aragorn will no longer express his doubts about his inheritance.

＞Parth Galen 3
Boromir:
（script）Our people. Our people.
（subtitle）Our race. Human beings.
comment：Boromir means the people of Minas Tirith, not the human race. The subtitle makes Aragorn a sci-fi hero who will save all humans in the world.

＞Parth Galen 4
Boromir:
（script）I would have followed you, my brother. My captain. My king.
（subtitle）I feel regret, our brother. Our captain. Our king.
comment：After Boromir heard Aragorn's words "our people", he finally accepts Aragorn as the king. "My" is an important word because Boromir personally pledges allegiance to his uncrowned king. These subtitles obscure Boromir's feelings.

＞"The Two Towers" trailer 1
Gandalf:
（script）Sauron is not so mighty yet that he is above fear.
（subtitle）Sauron is nothing for us to fear.
comment：This error in translation is unprofessional. Or the translator does not know what the whole story is all about.

＞"The Two Towers" trailer 2
Saruman:
（script）So Gandalf Greyhame thinks he has found the lost King of Gondor.
（subtitle）Did Gandalf find the lost Kingdom of Gondor?
comment：Again the subtitle reveals the translator's total lack of very basic knowledge of the story. Gondor is already ruined? Even Sauron has not made it so far.

これはバーリマンを、ホビットを見下し挨拶もしない不作法な亭主に仕立てている。

（字幕）ボロミア：ゴンドールの執政だった父はモルドール軍を退け我が種族の血で君らの領土を守った
字幕だとボロミアの父は既に故人になっている。原作既読者の中には、監督が設定を変えたのかと思った人もいた。

＞カザド＝ドゥム
（字幕）ガンダルフ：わしは生命の創造主　秘密（アノル）の炎につかえる者だ！
訳者は「焔の使い手」を省略、SecretとAnorの同一視、「生命の創造主」を捏造。

＞ロスロリエン　その１
（字幕）ボロミア：塔の見張りがこう叫ぶ　”ゴンドールの王が戻られた”と
ボロミアは死の間際に初めてアラゴルンを王と呼ぶ。字幕はこれを完全に無視し、クライマックスを台無しにする。

＞ロスロリエン　その２
（字幕）ガラドリエル：あなたにエレンディルの光を
観客中のトールキン読者は皆、三千年を跳び越えて「エアレンディル」が「エレンディル」に変えられているのに当惑した。

フロドはボロミアが指輪に支配されているのを知っているが、字幕ではフロドがボロミアを心底軽蔑しているように描写している。それはボロミアが悪意ある不正直な人間という印象を観客に決定づける。

指輪が誘惑してるんじゃなくてフロドが誘惑しているかのごとくである。

アラゴルンが自分の受け継いだ資質への疑いを今後口にしないと確信するとは、翻訳者は大胆過ぎる。

ボロミアが言わんとしたのは彼の国の人々であって、人類全般ではない。これではアラゴルンが人類を救うSF映画のヒーローに。

アラゴルンの「我らの民」という言葉を聞いたボロミアが、ついにアラゴルンを王と認めるところ。彼が個人的に、まだ王位についていない彼にとっての王に忠誠を誓っているので「私の」は重要な言葉。字幕はボロミアの心情を不明確にする。

この誤訳はプロの仕事とは思えない。もしくは翻訳者はこの物語が何の話だか知らない。

（字幕）サルマン：ガンダルフが見つけたのか？　失われた王国ゴンドールを
字幕はまたしても訳者の原作についての基本的知識の欠如を暴露している。ゴンドールが既に滅んでいる？サウロンでさえまだなしていない偉業だ。
