[22]タイガーバームとバンテリン ...（2003/06/30 10:33）
　

この前が「（その気のある読者には）英語の勉強になる」ような回だったので、今日は「とりとめもないことを書き散らす」回です (^^;) 。

　またしても肩こりに悩まされている。キーボードや本を相手の時間を減らし、適度の運動をすべきだとわかってはいるのだが、とりあえずタイガーバームを塗ってごまかす。
　禁煙やダイエットと同様、「運動しなければ」は今日の日本ならではの（←日本固有という意味ではもちろんないが）流行りモノの beliefs だと見てしまっているので、自分への至上命令になってくれない。
〔 beliefs：ここでは、×信仰・信念　○社会通念。当然の前提として通用する、ある時代ある文化の内部で共有される思い込み。「男は女より強い」「白人は最も進歩している」など、普遍の真理と思われていた/いること。〕

パソコン人種の例に洩れず、相棒も肩こりである。最近、バンテリンなる塗り薬がよく効くと言って使っているのだが、私はなぜか試してみようと思わず、以前通りタイガーバーム。どうやらこれはイメージの好みだけの問題なんだと思い当たった。

「バカ」と違って肩こりにつける薬は、ある。だが「バカ」と同様、肩こりも病気とは見なされない。飲み過ぎて宿酔とか寝不足で眠いように、原因が自分でわかっている（つもり）、ある種「当然の結果」と思うから、口に苦い良薬を求めるまでのことはしないで済ませるのであろう。

タイガーバーム、本名は「虎標萬金油」。六角形のガラス質の小さい壜がいい。蓋の安っぽい金、ラベルの虎の絵の色のセンスもロゴも、さすがはこれだけで財を成して観光名所タイガーバームガーデンを作ってしまうだけのことはある。箱なんて、捨てる前にしげしげと見入ってしまうくらい面白い。しかし多分、そういう目を楽しませてくれる要素に加え、匂いというのが決定的に好みを左右しているかもしれない。

化学系揮発性のツンとくる匂いは、嫌われているようで、実は男の子の多くにとってある種「快」らしい。バンテリンはたぶん、そっちに属している。新しく、シャープなのだ。
一方、こちらは萬金油の名に恥じず、薄荷・丁子といった古くからの香料の系統である。もしかしたら私は、タイガーバームの外側のデザインにキッチュな懐かしさを覚えるだけでなく、痛む肩に薬を擦り込みながら、意識の下では、亡き祖母が古い箪笥を開けると樟脳の匂いがしたことなどを思い出すのかもしれない。そうして、何やら落ち着き、ほっと気が緩む。それが「効いて」いるのかもしれないのである。ｺﾒﾝﾄ
