[42]連載中？「なぜか幕末（その２）」 ...（2004/04/10 10:59）

（その１と２の間にヘンなものがはさまってますがお気になさらず）

＞やっぱり幕末は面白いです！　司馬遼太郎ならなおさら、保証つき！

と前回書いた。それに理屈はいらないのだけど、因果な性分で、「なぜこう面白いのか」「新撰組の何が新鮮なのか」をつい考察。
問題は三つに分かれていて、

１．司馬遼太郎が面白い：これは「優れた作家性」（力量、時代とその群像への愛etc.）で片づくのだが。初心者に最適でありながら、読み巧者にとっても発見が尽きない。

２．幕末という時代が面白い：激動変革期というだけでなく、民族レベルカルチャーショックとそれにどう対応したかの「文化的苦闘と変容」が面白いのである。かつナショナリズム（←政治軍事ではなく、司馬氏定義による。すなわち素朴な土着感情としての、生まれ在所と同族を誇る気持ち）が刺激される快感。平たく言えば、「日本人って、サムライって、やっぱりすごかったかも」である（苦笑）。

３．新撰組が面白い：各人物も、その配色の妙も味わい深いが、それなら他にいくらも例はある。言ってしまっていいのか迷うが、自分の潜在意識にとっての話と限定して、以下独断と偏見ながら――

「人ひとりの命は地球より重い」と言い、健康増進法なんてものが堂々と正義である今日にあって、かくも人命が軽視された時と場があったという歴史的事実そのものが、ひそかに爽快なのである。

そもそも「武士道とは死ぬことと見つけたり」である。自分の一命は紙一枚より軽いと思え、親が子にそう言い続けたのが武士の家なのだ。わが命ならどう捨てるのも勝手であるが、新撰組はとにかく、ひとを斬る。思想所属を異にするというだけで、長州志士など「外」の人間を斬るばかりではない。「内」である新撰組隊士を
「士道不覚悟」
すなわち武士らしからぬふるまいがあった、という理由で、同志だった者に次々切腹を命じあるいは斬首しあるいは暗殺する。実際に悪行の数々を知られていた芹沢鴨などはまだしも、同じ攘夷でも佐幕より勤皇寄りであれば斬る。薩摩屋敷に出入りした疑いだけで斬る。敵を取り逃がしたのに切腹しなかったというので斬る。隊を脱けたいと洩らしたので斬る。

人の命を何だと思っているんだ！? という叫びはここでは意味をなさない。出発点において、どの陣営でも命など軽い、軽くなければならないのだから。それを狂気として全否定し背を向けるのはたやすいが、文字の力と自らの想像力によって共感と同化に至ることができれば、あるいは見えてくるかもしれない。この生ぬるい閉塞の時代にじわじわと日本人を侵している病の正体が。
