    Kingdom of Heaven

    the lord:
    And what of Jerusalem?

    Godfrey:
    Jerusalem?

    Hospitaler:
In peril, my lord, as always.

    the Lord:
We have stood there against the Saracens for over a hundred years.

    Hospitaler:
Saracens, as you call them, have now unified
in Egypt, Syria and all Arabia.

    the Lord:
    Year.

    Hospitaler:
    Saracens and someone new.

    Lord's son:
    Saradin, the king.

    black man:

    the Lord:
    Gibberish.

    Very fine.

    the Lord:
And yet, you do not drink.
A knight should be a knight, a monk a monk...

    Godfrey:
    Brother.

    the Lord:
...not both. One. That's what I say.
Now I may be old-fashioned, but as for the cup,
I have, uh, an artificer, uh, a blacksmith.
    Or did have.

    Godfrey:
Which son of the blacksmith of my time is the blacksmith now?

    the Lord:
    Balian, the eldest.
    His child died.
His wife fell into a melancholy. She would not listen to reason.
    She killed herself. It occurs.
    But what's that to you?

    Godfrey:
    Private matter.

    the Lord:(隣席の息子に)
It's been six and 20 years since my brother took the cross.
Now he returns an actual baron of the kingdom of Jerusalem.
How is that for the lot of the younger brother?
With no heir, comes to me and thus to you.

    Lord's son:
Then I thank the stars for my uncle.
    [好機というわけですね*]

    ---------------------------
    *注:初稿では、この青年が城主の息子か、甥なのかわからず
    uncle=城主で「伯父上、あなたに幸運が転がり込んできましたね」
    というほうに解釈してしまった。
    しかしchap11で彼が「父と司教の命令で(バリアンを逮捕する)」と言っているので
    息子であることが確認された。ハズれの弁解ではないが、普通ならば
    神または天に感謝する+for人と来れば、その「人」は幸運ということなのに
    ここではThank you for the coffeeのごとく、「叔父の出現を」天に感謝するの意であった
    ということか。やれやれ。

    今までに10回は言ってきた事ですが、誤訳しない翻訳者はひとりもいません。私は名人でも第一人者でもない普通の翻訳者にすぎません。くれぐれも盲信はしないでください。(7/1記)

    この章で、例の腐れ司祭がバリアンの兄ではなく弟である事が明らかになった。
    公式ガイドブックで「バリアンの兄」と翻訳してしまったスタッフには気の毒なことである。
    It occurs.(←よく起こることだ、致し方なし、の意)

    注1::海路か陸路か、の意で訳すべきかも。

    注2::自分の死が近いことを示唆しているが、そこまで訳出できず。

    注3:劇場バージョンの日本語版では、Would I had fought youになっていたのだが。have と had では意味が違ってくる(参照No.3355
    ただし日本語に訳すとその差は無に等しくなるので、普通なら気にするほどのことではない。

    (以前にも書いたことだが、英語圏DVDの英語字幕は聴覚障害者のためのもので、基本的に普通の人の聞き取り書きにすぎない。脚本家のチェックが入っていないために省略や間違いがあるのは珍しくない。むしろ日本版のほうが、翻訳用に渡された最終脚本に基づいている場合が多い。らしい)

    注4:ここの意訳字幕は気に入っているので、自分の訳に差し替えないが
    原文の意味は「そうか、よかった。それならどっちにとっても問題無しだな」と(私には)解釈できる。
